The Megerian Company was established in 1917 in New York by the
grandfather of the current owners. Back then, grandfather Megerian was involved
in washing, repairing, selling and buying antique rugs. In the 1970s the
company was passed on to his grandchildren and they began manufacturing high-end hand-woven rugs worldwide. The Megerians’ first factories were opened in
Egypt, followed by additional countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan,
Romania, China and India. In the mid-1990’s the Megerians returned to Armenia in
order to revitalize the Armenian rug weaving traditions, to help create jobs in
Armenia, and save our lost culture.
In the Early 2000’s the Megerian family purchased the government-owned Haygorg Rug Factories, which were producing handmade rugs during Soviet
times.
The Megerians made a
substantial investment in revitalizing 22 rug weaving factories across the
country. The rugs that were being produced during the Soviet era were using
Persian, one & half knots and yarns with chemical dyes.
The Megerians changed the
method of rug weaving in Armenia back to the traditional Armenian style and
taught all the weavers the original Armenian methods of weaving. This age-old
technique has been passed down from generation to generation in the Megerian
family.
The Megerian rugs manufactured in Armenia are the only Armenian rugs woven with Armenian double knots and which are dyed with natural organic colors extracted from numerous plants found on the Armenian highlands.
